“2040 is a refreshingly optimistic documentary that takes the form of a letter to Gameau’s four-year-old daughter, Velvet, with deep concern for the planet she will eventually inherit. After embarking on an ambitious journey, interviewing farmers, pioneers and other experts about actions we can take now to save our planet. Gameau, through what he called “fact-based dreaming,” discovers that there are just as many currently available solutions as there are problems to battle. What began as a search of ways to lower emissions and reverse global warming transforms into a more granular exploration of strategies for strengthening communities, supporting women’s education, improving the quality of food and soil, and restoring ecosystems. 2040 helps the viewer navigate its overwhelming topic using humor, beautiful animation, visual effects and touching interviews with children from around the globe on what they would like to see in the year in which the film is named. Masterfully, Gameau responds to a crisis we associate with doom through an approach that is constructive, upbeat and accessible, even for kids.”
